This year I’m getting the scariest costume of all!
IF I’m not too late.
Waiting ‘til the last minute to shop?
Now, THAT’S scary!
What if they run out?
I creep down the decoration aisles
dodging dancing spiders,
fleeing flying bats,
watching wicked witches…
One more row to go…
almost to the costumes…
around the corner…
and…
What is THAT?
It’s green.
it slithers
out of its season…
into this one…
It's…
A CHRISTMAS TREE?!?!
On Halloween??
Hey Santa! TRICK or treat?
I guess I’ll be an elf this year.
This is my 90 word entry for Susaanna Leonard Hill's 12th Annual #Halloweensie contest.
The rules? Write a 100 word or less Halloween story for kids 12 and under using any version of these three words: "slither, treat," and "scare."

Author's Note: This year's contest entry was inspired by a trip to Target in early October. I rounded the corner expecting to find Halloween candy and was greeted by... a Christmas tree! (And for those of you thinking it's way too early for Target to be putting up Christmas decorations, you should know that my mom texted me a picture of HER Christmas tree today. She put it up this afternoon!)
