Magical Day
by Abby N. Wooldridge
“What a glorious day it's been, Barnaby! Such a surprise!” Ellery scooped her cat into her lap and leaned over the cauldron. She combed her fingers through her hair. Memories drifted down like stardust. She stirred them with the wand she had left behind this morning. Wands away--sunup to sunset her parents had said.
A golden fog rose from the kettle. “Look at the beautiful forest, Barnaby. Smell the apples? So sweet and crisp! Dad put me on his shoulders so I could reach them.”
The vapor turned blue. “We splashed through the sparkling creek. I drank handfuls of icy diamonds.”
The memory swirled into bright green. “Mom spun me on the tire swing. We laughed until our tummies hurt. We made pine needle beds in the warm sun and watched the branches wave in the breeze. The clouds danced to the bluebird’s ballad.” Ellery swayed, and Barnaby purred along with the song.
“Then we swept the leaves into giant jumping piles with our brooms.” Ellery tapped the pot. The hazy mist whirled into a rainbow of leaves that floated down over the two friends.
“Barnaby, we had the most magical day--the day we put our wands away!”
