Dandelion Dreams
150 words
By Abby N. Wooldridge
Their friendship bloomed the same day I did.
“Look!” the girl said, spying me. “Sunshine!”
The boy tried to pick me, but she stopped him.
Today, she’s not here to intervene.
“She needs a little sunshine,” he tells me.
He’s right—she’s been sick for days.
He reaches…
She knocks on the window, shaking her head.
Everyday he comes.
He watches the window.
Waves to her.
“I wish she’d get better,” he whispers.
Me, too.
One day, he waits
and waits
and waits.
She doesn’t come to the window.
He shrivels up.
I do, too.
I spend the whole night hoping.
My dreams for her change me.
In the morning, the boy comes back.
He gasps when he sees me.
I’m ready.
He reaches…
and finally picks me.
We close our eyes,
wish together.
Hope flies free.
At last,
my dreams come true.
She’s back outside,
surrounded by my sunshine.
