#KidlitZombieWeek

It's ALIVE!

Many thanks to the 6 Ladies and a MANuscript (@6and_MANuscript) critique group for hosting #KidlitZombieWeek! And an extra special thank you to the amazing Kirsten W. Larson (@KirstenWLarson) for her incredibly generous prize donation. I was so excited to win a manuscript critique from her. She was so helpful and encouraging, and I appreciate her thoughtful critique! Congratulations to her on her new book WOOD, WIRE, WINGS. Check out her website for more information!

Zombie week was especially meaningful to me. Not only did I spend time breathing new life into some buried manuscripts, but I also had a surgery to resurrect my dead wrist.

At the beginning of March, I was diagnosed with Kienbock's Disease, a rare bone disease that affects 1 in 200,000 people. The doctor described it as a heart attack to the bone where the blood supply gets cut off, causing the bone to die, creating avascular necrosis of the lunate bone in the wrist.

This has really put things in perspective for me. During my first appointment with the orthopedic surgeon back in February, he mentioned the possibility of Kienbock's but said his suspicions were low. He wanted me to get an MRI to rule it out. We talked about worst case scenario. It's a progressive disease, and if not treated, the lunate eventually breaks down and crumbles. Arthritis sets in, and the only option becomes to remove it and fuse the other bones in the wrist together. He told me I wouldn't be able to move my wrist if that were the case. The first question out of my mouth was, "Will I still be able to type?" I was relieved when he said yes because that meant I would still be able to write.

So, Wednesday of Kidlit Zombie week, in the midst of a global pandemic, I had a revascularized bone graft of my lunate. The surgery went well. And now I wait.

I wait, and I write. I wait to watch God breathe new life back into the bone. And I write during this time He's given me to recover.

As I experience my own wrist resurrection, I am also working to resurrect some dead manuscripts calling to me from the grave. Zombie hand writes zombie drafts!
