#SpringFlingKidLit 2022

Flying Friends

Abby N. Wooldridge

“Flying contest–two weeks!” cried Caterpillar.

“I’m in!” said Beetle.

“You can’t fly!” laughed Bluebird.

“He’s right,” sighed Caterpillar. “This contest is for the birds.”

“We can fly,” said Beetle. “If we try.”

Caterpillar and Beetle gathered sticks, leaves, and flowers.

“Gorgeous!” cheered Beetle. “We’ll try it tomorrow. Sleep tight!”

But Caterpillar couldn’t sleep. Crafting the kite had worked up his appetite.

One little nibble couldn’t possibly hurt…

But Caterpillar couldn’t stop himself.

Full of regret, he spun himself into a tizzy and cried himself to sleep.

Two weeks later, he crawled out of his cocoon and found Beetle. “I’m sorry. I ate our kite.”

“I know. I made another one.”

“You made a tail…”

“Right. You have wings!”

Beetle held onto the kite string. Butterfly soared. They didn’t win the contest, but it didn’t matter. They had flown. Together. And that was the best prize of all.
